HSM 535 Financial Management for Health Care Organizations
Students will acquire a working knowledge of cash flow projections, budgeting, cost accounting and control evaluation techniques for not-for-profit organizations. Case study analysis and presentations will be the primary instructional methods. Students will learn to use an electronic spreadsheet to assist in analyzing case studies. An extensive accounting case analysis problem involving a not-for-profit entity will be assigned. Students will be required to submit an in-depth written report, which will reflect this organization’s financial viability. Prerequisites: HSM 500 and ACC 201 or its equivalent.
HIM 600 Quality Improvement in Healthcare
Overview of quality improvement methods in healthcare organizations with emphasis on health information systems and informatics. Also includes topics on general workflow and human factor re-engineering, risk management, quality assessment, patient care management, and change management. Prerequisites: STA 100.
NUR 524 Program Planning and Development
(From Graduate Catalog)Program planning provides a concise, practical, critically reflective approach to planning, managing, and evaluating health programs within an acute or community based health care delivery system. A variety of theoretical and health system models are applied to program planning. The program planning process is presented with illustrations of how this process provides fiscally sound, sustainable change in a variety of practice and collaborative environments.
(From Proposal) Developing effective programs within a health care setting requires the nurse leader to maintain advanced level theoretical and systems thinking. In this course, students learn the importance of community assessment, fiscal management, short and long-term program modeling and program evaluation toward the successful and sustainable outcomes from effective health care programming.
NUR 609 Nursing Leadership Theory for Innovative Health Care Systems
Leadership challenges in nursing and in health care are examined within the culturally diverse health care environment. Knowledge, skill, and attributes of the nurse leader are developed through the examination of the role of the nurse leader in relation to theories and strategies utilized for advanced professional practice. Opportunities are created to critically reflect on effective approaches needed to be an effective leader in situations of change management, quality improvement, conflict resolution, and resource utilization. NUR 612 Nursing Leadership Practicum Design
In partnership with a nurse leader and management, leadership theory and principles are applied during the design of this culminating experience. Design of a practicum provides the student an opportunity for critical reflection on their course of education in relation to the advanced practice role in nursing leadership and administration. Synthesis of management and leadership theoretical principles, practice guidelines and pertinent research should be emphasized when planning a practicum experience. Contingent with the needs of the organization, each learner must design an administrative project that will assist the facility in its overall operation. Included in the design will be steps of implementation as well as the tools for evaluation. Pre/Co-requisites: NUR 524, HRM 518, NUR 609, HSM 535, and HSM 601
NUR 614 Nursing Leadership Practicum
In partnership with a nurse leader, management, leadership theories and principles are applied during this practicum. The role of the nurse leader is analyzed in relation to professional practice, effective leadership, change management, collaboration, and evaluation of quality. Within the practicum the student is expected to apply knowledge gained from all previous coursework. It provides the student an opportunity for critical reflection on nursing leadership. Synthesis of management and leadership theoretical principles, practice guidelines and pertinent research should be emphasized when implementing and evaluating the practicum experience. Contingent with the needs of the organization, each learner must implement and evaluate their previously designed leadership project that will assist the facility in its overall operation (150 practicum hours or 75 hrs./cr.) are required).
