In the summer of 2022, SUNY Poly will once again offer a summer undergraduate research program at both the Utica and Albany campuses. The program is planned to run ten weeks from Tuesday, May 31 – Friday, August 5, 2022.
Students and faculty mentors can participate in four tracks defined below. All four tracks will take place over the same ten-week period and will culminate with two poster sessions tentatively scheduled in Utica (Thursday 8/4) and Albany (Friday 8/5).
- Track 1: SURP-Funded. Students would be paid to do research at minimum wage ($13.20/hr) for 40-hrs/week. Funds are limited; therefore, faculty will need to apply for these positions. Projects will be selected for funding by the SURP Team and the SPI deans based on: Student interest, research description, COVID plans, and mentoring plans. Although the SURP team will not advertise the positions outside of SPI, it is possible for non-SPI students to be funded by this program.
- Track 2: Faculty-Grant Funded SURP. Students are paid from faculty grants. Not counting indirect costs, the cost to faculty would be approximately $5544 for in-state SPI students.
- Track 3: Volunteers. Students can volunteer and no money is exchanged in this option. The expectation is that these students volunteer for the full 10 weeks and participate in the poster sessions held at the end of SURP.
- Track 4: Research for Credit. Students can conduct summer research for credit with the faculty mentor listed as the instructor. If a student is not a SUNY Poly student, they would take the credits on a non-matriculated basis.
Each professor can propose as many projects as they wish. Please fill out the attached SURP Faculty Mentor Application for each of your projects and submit your application by 5 pm Monday, January 31st to:
The project descriptions will aid the 2022 SURP committee to align the student’s and prospective adviser’s research interests in the initial stages of the matching process.
