Small Business Basics is a 20-hour non-credit course available through the Mohawk Valley SBDC. The course provides a mixture of entry- and intermediate-level business instruction and is suited for a wide range of participants from the newcomer preparing to start a business, to the seasoned business owner desiring to sharpen their business skills.
The Small Business Basics course is offered both independently and as a program to fulfill the 20-hour business course requirement of the Self-Employment Assistance Program (SEAP), which is a New York Department of Labor program that enables qualified unemployment compensation recipients to start their own business while maintaining their unemployment benefits.
The Small Business Basics course curriculum includes:
- Small business record keeping
- Internet marketing and social media
- Market research, advertising, and media
- Funding your project: fact vs. fiction
- Building the business plan
The course is delivered in modular form and is typically offered as a daytime or evening program. All classes are held Monday-Friday at SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Utica. Instruction is provided by SBDC business advisors and select outside consultants. The registration fee includes all course materials.
