Pass/Fail Grade Policy for Spring 2020

In consideration of extraordinary circumstances related to the COVID-19 pandemic, SUNY Polytechnic Institute is offering a credit/no credit grading option for Spring 2020.

SUNY Poly students may select a different grading scale for all Spring 2020 classes that are currently on the A/F grade scale.

The new grading scale available (CR/NC) has three grades: High Pass, Pass or No Credit. Grades recorded on this grading scale have no impact on a student’s GPA.

Faculty will provide a grade on the A/F grade scale for all students by May 12, 2020. Students can request that their grade be recorded on the CR/NC scale at any time, either prior to or AFTER they receive a grade on the A/F scale.

After students request a course grade be recorded on the CR/NC scale, they will be advised about the implications of their request. For example, the CR/NC scale may not satisfy the requirements that some courses in a major require a specific grade. Additionally, choosing a CR/NC grading mode may have implications for eligibility for financial aid.

FAQs

Who is eligible to switch to credit/no credit grading for courses?
Any student, graduate or undergraduate, registered for spring 2020 classes who has not withdrawn can request to have one or more of their courses graded on the CR/NC scale.

How do I choose credit/no credit grading?
To request credit/no credit grading, please complete this Pass/No Credit Request form, also available on the  Registrar’s Office forms page.

What classes can I take credit/no credit?
You can request pass/no credit for some or all of your classes. CR/NC is not available for S/U grades.

How does credit/no credit grading work?
Faculty will assign a standard A/F grade. If a student applies for the CR/NC option, an HP, P, or N grade will be assigned as a substitute grade. In CR/NC grading, the course needs to be graded with a letter grade of D or higher in order to receive a passing grade. For grades below D, a no credit N grade will appear on the transcript. Neither the HP, P nor N grade will impact the student’s GPA, but will be counted toward credits attempted and may still affect financial aid.

What grade will show on my transcript for CR/NC courses?
The transcript key on the back of the transcript will be updated to include special notations indicating the circumstances for spring 2020, as well as this grade scale:

Grade Scale For Undergraduate Students

  • HP (high pass) is equivalent to a C grade or higher
  • P (pass) is equivalent to a C-, D+, or D grade
  • N (no credits) is equivalent to the F grade, but has no impact on the student’s GPA

Grade Scale For Graduate Students

  • HP (high pass) is equivalent to a B grade or higher
  • P (pass) is equivalent to a B- C+, or C
  • N (no credits) is equivalent to the F grade, but has no impact on the student’s GPA

Does earning a High Pass or a Pass fulfill a prerequisite for a future course that requires a minimum grade?
An HP grade will fulfill a prerequisite requirement of C grade or higher at the undergraduate level. If the original grade is lower than the prerequisite requirement for a specific future course, please contact the Office of Student Success and Advisement or your advisor to discuss your options.

Does the CR/NC option affect my grade point average (GPA)?
The HP, P, and/or N grades will not affect your GPA. HP and P grades will earn the credits and fulfill requirements, but they will not change your GPA. Other grades that do not affect the GPA are S,U, N, and W grades. However, N, U and W grades do not fulfill requirements or prerequisites. F grades do impact the GPA.

Will CR/NC grading affect my eligibility for the Dean’s List/President’s List?
Eligibility for the academic honor lists is based upon full-time (12 or more credit hours) matriculated student status in courses that are graded on the A/F scale. If fewer than 12 of your credit hours are in courses that you retain grades on the A/F scale, you will not be eligible for Academic Honors. Academic Honors are established based on the recorded grade as of May 15, 2020.

Will the CR/NC grading affect my financial aid?
Opting for a CR/NC grade will not affect your spring 2020 financial aid, but may affect your future eligibility depending on individual circumstances. Recent guidance from both federal and state aid programs may help lessen the impact of enrollment changes given the difficulties surrounding COVID-19. The Financial Aid Office will counsel you on the impact of electing the CR/NC option.

The Financial Aid Office will review your request to switch to the CR/NC grading scale and inform you of any implications.

How does CR/NC grading affect the repeat grade option?
If you are repeating a course this semester and then elect a HP/P grade to replace the letter grade of the course, the HP/P will replace the original grade in the GPA. If you repeat the HP/P graded course in the future, the higher grade will replace the HP/P grade (as always, the original grade will remain on the transcript as part of your academic history).

Will my financial aid be affected if I withdraw from a course or courses?
Withdrawing from a course will not affect financial aid for spring 2020. However, withdrawing from some or all of your spring 2020 courses may affect your financial aid in a future semester depending on individual circumstances. Recent guidance from both federal and state aid programs may help lessen the impact of enrollment changes given the difficulties surrounding COVID-19. Please contact the Financial Aid Office for information on the impact of choosing the withdrawal option. The Last day to withdraw from a spring 2020 class is May 1, 2020.

Will opting for CR/NC affect my GI Bill?
No. Conversion from a standard grading scale (A, A-, B+…) to CR/NC will not affect your GI Bill benefits.

Can CR/NC grades be used to satisfy program requirements?
In some cases, CR/NR grades may not satisfy requirements for your program. The Office of Student Success, in consultation with program advisors, will review your request and inform you of any implications.

If I elect the CR/NC and find out that I need a letter grade for application to a graduate or professional program, can I change my grade back?

Students may need a CR/NC grade changed back to a letter grade for application to a graduate or professional program, or to satisfy requirements for a major. Students can change a CR/NC grade back to a standard letter grade at any time by written request to registrar@sunypoly.edu.
