Welcome to SUNY Poly!
As SUNY Polytechnic Institute’s Interim President, I am pleased to welcome you to SUNY Poly and the Office of the President’s online resources. A member of the State University of New York, the largest comprehensive university system in the United States, SUNY Poly is proud to pioneer a unique educational and research environment at its two campuses, located in Albany and Utica, New York, where these efforts, coupled with impactful economic development initiatives, make this institution a powerful catalyst for creative, experiential learning, enabling our alumni to thrive in the 21st century economy.
Between both campuses, SUNY Poly provides degrees in disciplines that include computer science, nursing, business, engineering, arts and sciences, communication, and the behavioral sciences, as well as nanoscale engineering and nanoscale science, among many others. Adding to the college experience at SUNY Poly, we offer a vibrant, active student life, featuring athletics, cultural programs, events, and more, within a growing workforce-focused ecosystem that offers students unmatched hands-on experience.
Notably, SUNY Poly continues to receive high rankings, with U.S. News & World Report’s 2020 College List ranking the institution 2nd for “Best Value Schools” in the Regional Universities-North category, advancing from 11th in 2019. SUNY Poly is also ranked 2nd in “Top Public Schools” and 12th overall in the Regional Universities-North category, moving up six spots from 18th in 2019. Additionally, we are proud that SUNY Poly is ranked 6th for “Best Colleges for Veterans” within its classification.
As a testament to the exciting student experience SUNY Poly provides, we welcomed the two largest student bodies in decades for both the current and previous academic year, with approximately 3,000 students. To bolster this trend, we are building academic pipelines with partners ranging from Mohawk Valley Community College, Herkimer County Community College, Schenectady County Community College, Albany Law School, Upstate Medical University, Rome Memorial Hospital, and GlobalFoundries, among others. Additionally, we are also enhancing the student experience by building the first new SUNY zero-net carbon-certified residence hall and offering enhanced residential options at our Utica and Albany campuses, respectively.
SUNY Poly remains a leader in cutting-edge research and innovation, with $352 million in total research and development expenditures during fiscal year 2018-2019, and growing recognition from the research community and general public. Our faculty and student researchers drive scientific and engineering frontiers and advance knowledge and technologies in areas such as nanobioscience, electronics, photonics, and clean energy, and conduct scholarly studies in social sciences, arts, and humanities. Additionally, we are excited about IBM and Applied Materials’ recent, respective $2 billion and $600 million investments to grow their high-tech footprint in New York as a result of the exciting potential of our unique educational and industrial ecosystem. Furthermore, we are excited to partner with the Air Force Research Laboratory-Information Directorate, Griffiss Institute, and Oneida County to support the development of an Open Innovation Campus for catalyzing Quantum Information Science-focused research, development, and career opportunities.
At the same time, SUNY Poly aims to build an even more robust foundation through development of our Framework for a Sustainable Future, focusing on further fostering our incredible academic, research, and economic development opportunities.
SUNY Poly’s expert faculty, outstanding staff, and top-tier students drive SUNY Poly’s excellence in academics, research, and economic engagement. Because of their steadfast efforts, our institution has so much to offer; we are proud to support educational opportunities that perfectly dovetail with New York State’s innovation economy and today’s in-demand careers, allowing our alumni to excel as they tackle some of the many complex challenges our society faces. On behalf of SUNY Poly, we are thrilled to be at the forefront of this critical effort.
