International Admissions - Graduate Admission Requirements

Admission to SUNY Polytechnic Institute is competitive and based on an extensive review of academic qualifications, proof of financial support, and recommendations. Foreign transcripts and documents must be professionally evaluated and translated in English. Applicants must use a service that is a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services. We require a course-by-course evaluation with GPA calculated.

Degree Programs + Admission Requirements

Spring ’23 Admission Requirements

  • Applicants to the MS CIS program must possess a baccalaureate degree with a major in computer science or information systems. In addition, a background in mathematics including calculus, discrete mathematics and probability is required.
  • Applicants without a CS or IS degree may be admitted with the condition that they complete the appropriate designated bridge courses with a B grade or higher within the first 16 credit hours of graduate work completed at SUNY Poly. Bridge courses are intended to provide students with the fundamental knowledge in computer science as appropriate. They do not count toward the MS degree requirements. Students will be notified of the need for the completion of bridge courses at the time of admission.
  • Applicants must generally have academic credentials that are the U.S. equivalent of a B or better (a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale) for admissions consideration. For applicants from countries using a percentage grading system, a 60% minimum academic credential is required.
  • Submission of a GRE General Test score is required. The minimum score requirement is 153 quantitative and 140 verbal. The SUNY Poly institution code for score reporting is 2896.

  • Applicants to the MS NCS program must possess a baccalaureate degree with a major in cybersecurity, network and computer security, computer science or systems, electrical engineering, or a related field. In addition, coursework or a demonstrated proficiency in each of the following areas is required: computing fundamentals, UNIX/Linux programming, computer organization, networking of information systems, discrete math, calculus and statistics.
  • Applicants lacking the required background may be admitted with the condition that they complete the appropriate designated prerequisite coursework (or provide proof of completion of equivalent courses) with a grade of B or higher PRIOR to their arrival to the US and matriculation into the program. The prerequisite courses do not count toward the MS degree requirements. Students will be notified of the need for the completion of prerequisite courses at the time of admission.
  • Applicants must generally have academic credentials that are the U.S. equivalent of a B or better (a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale) for admissions. For applicants from countries using a percentage grading system, a 70% minimum academic credential (with a maximum of two backlogs) is required.
  • Submission of a GRE General Test Score is required. The minimum score requirement is 153 quantitative and 140 verbal. The SUNY Poly institution code for score reporting is 2896.

English Language Proficiency
All international applicants to the Utica campus must demonstrate English language proficiency by achieving one of the minimum scores noted below from one of the following standardized exams:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): Internet based score of 79
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Overall band score of 6.5
  • PTE Academic (PTE): Overall score of 53
  • Duolingo English Test (DET): Total score of 105

You are exempt from the English Proficiency requirement if:

  • English is your native language: Australia, the Bahamas, Belize, the British Isles, England, New Zealand, English-speaking Canadian provinces, the Fiji Islands, Jamaica, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Ghana, Gambia, Liberia, the Virgin Islands, the West Indies, Trinidad, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Nigeria, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Switzerland, Holland, France, Germany, Sweden, and Norway.
  • You graduated from an accredited U.S. high school or college with an associate's degree or bachelor's degree.

Albany Campus

Degree Programs + Admission Requirements
Applicants to the following programs must have earned a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent with a 3.0 (B) or higher cumulative GPA by U.S. standards to be considered for admission. 
The bachelor's degree must be in the physical, chemical, biological, or computer sciences, mathematics, or engineering. 


English Language Proficiency
All international applicants to the Albany campus must demonstrate English language proficiency by achieving one of the minimum scores noted below from one of the following standardized exams:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): Internet based score of 100
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Overall band score of 7.5
  • PTE Academic (PTE): Overall score of 73
  • Duolingo English Test (DET): Total score of 120

You are exempt from the English Proficiency requirement if:

  • English is your native language: Australia, the Bahamas, Belize, the British Isles, England, New Zealand, English-speaking Canadian provinces, the Fiji Islands, Jamaica, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Ghana, Gambia, Liberia, the Virgin Islands, the West Indies, Trinidad, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Nigeria, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Switzerland, Holland, France, Germany, Sweden, and Norway.
  • You graduated from an accredited U.S. high school or college with an associate's degree or bachelor's degree.

GRE (Graduate Record Exam) 
Highly recommended, but not required for admission to the nano programs.
