Robert Esche is a nationally recognized sports executive, entrepreneur, and philanthropist whose career reflects a lifelong commitment to leadership, community service, and regional revitalization.
Following a distinguished professional hockey career in the National Hockey League and international competition, Esche returned to his hometown of Utica, New York, with a clear vision: to use sports, business, and civic leadership as catalysts for economic growth and community pride. As President of Mohawk Valley Garden, he played a central role in the development of the Adirondack Bank Center, the Utica Comets, and the Utica University Nexus Center. Together, these initiatives transformed the region into a year-round sports and entertainment destination and reestablished Utica as a hub for professional athletics and major events.
Under his leadership, the Mohawk Valley has hosted events of national and international significance, including the 2024 IIHF Women’s World Championship and the 2024 World Lacrosse Box Championships—demonstrating the region’s ability to compete on a global stage.
Beyond sports, Esche is an accomplished entrepreneur and founder of Aqua Vino. He actively supports local agriculture, small businesses, and regional partnerships that strengthen the economy while preserving the character of the Mohawk Valley.
He is also the founder of the Save of the Day Foundation, established in 2003 to support children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. The foundation has raised more than $3 million to directly benefit local children, military members, and families in need. Through sports, business, and philanthropy, Esche exemplifies service-driven leadership and enduring community impact.
