Biofabrication published, “Engineering cryoelectrospun elastin-alginate scaffolds to serve as stromal extracellular matrices,” collaborative research by SUNY Poly Graduate Student Pujhitha Ramesh. The research was undertaken with SUNY Poly professors Susan Sharfstein and Yubing Xie, in partnership with Professor Melinda Larsen from the University at Albany and Professor Kristen Mills from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).
The research article shares a manufacturing strategy for production of novel scaffolds that mimic the native extracellular matrix (ECM), potentially providing an opportunity to create artificial soft tissues such as salivary gland that can be used for regenerative medicine applications or to understand soft tissue pathology and disease. The team demonstrates “that elastin-alginate cryoelectrospun scaffolds mimic many structural and functional properties of ECM (of soft tissues) and have potential for future use in regenerative medicine applications.” The research builds upon a previously announced NIH National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research grant and collaborative effort.
