On a day when SolarCity's massive South Buffalo plant was touted during a topping off ceremony, one of the key players who put the regionally transformative deal together is looking ahead.

Alain Kaloyeros, State University of New York Polytechnic Institute - New York’s nano tech development guru- said SolarCity officials are so pleased with the rapid progress of the Buffalo plant that they may consider doing additional expansions in the region.

“We are already exploring other opportunities for SolarCity in Buffalo and they are interested in doing more,” Kaloyeros said in an interview with Business First.

Among the many factors that caught the attention of SolarCity executives is that in just 22 months, the project has gone from an initial announcement to the shell of the 1.2 million square foot building erected. The building, in terms of square footage, is the largest single construction project in Buffalo’s history is expected to be completed next year with production of SolarCity’s solar panels to begin by early 2017.
