Dr. Andrew Russell Explores 'Endless Frontiers of Maintenance' in Published Book Chapter
Dr. Andrew Russell, Provost of SUNY Polytechnic Institute, recently published a chapter in the book Communication Maintenance in Longue Durée, edited by Gabriele Balbi and Roberto Leggero. His chapter, titled “Endless Frontiers of Maintenance: The Longue Durée of Communication Infrastructure in the United States,” takes a fresh look at how communication networks in the U.S. have developed over the centuries.
Dr. Russell’s chapter moves from early encounters between indigenous peoples and colonizers to the establishment of the Bell telephone system in the 20th century. He argues that while many historians focus on new technologies and quick changes, it's equally important to recognize the long-term stability of these systems and the dedicated workers who keep them running. His insights remind us that maintaining technology is just as crucial as creating it, offering a new perspective on the history of communication in America.
