UTICA, NY – SUNY Polytechnic Institute Associate Professor and Network and Computer Security (Cybersecurity) Department Chair, Dr. Hisham Kholidy, recently earned the “Best Paper Award” as a sole author at one of the well-reputed IEEE conferences, the Internet of Things: Systems, Management and Security (IoTSMS 2023) Conference in San Antonio, TX. 

The paper, which Dr. Kholidy presented, entitled “A Smart Network Slicing Provisioning Framework for 5G-based IoT Networks,” develops an innovative Smart Network Slicing Provisioning Framework that uses a new artificial intelligence technique developed at SUNY Poly’s ACRL to address the shortcomings of the current AI-based multi-criteria decision-making techniques. Using this technique, the proposed framework can rank and select the proper 5G service provider that can efficiently host the 5G network slices using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as the security level, cost, and performance criteria.

Dr. Kholidy explains that to the best of his knowledge, none of the current works introduce an accurate real-time network slice provisioning and resource orchestration system that specifically works for open federated 5G networks and considers these systems’ real-time scalability and dynamic features due to the lack of publicly available open 5G testbeds and datasets to test proposed solutions. 

The work detailed in the paper is part of a recently funded $1.1 Million Contract from Air Force Research Lab to Improve Security Across 5G Open Architecture and is consistent with another AGILITY project, Dr. Kholidy is involved in that’s funded by the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT) in South Korea.

Dr. Kholidy said their long-term goal is to develop a first-of-its-kind “5G Open Testbed” and the work explained in the paper is a first step towards that goal. He adds that the plan is to expand SUNY Poly’s current 5G testbed using the $1.3 million that they recently received from the NY Workforce Development Initiative (WDI) fund to support the infrastructure and training of the Institute’s students in this vital area to ensure students are prepared to enter the cybersecurity and 5G workforce.
