SUNY Poly Ranks High Once Again in Latest Lists of Best Regional Universities, Top Public Schools, Best Value Schools, Best Colleges for Veterans, and for Social Mobility

ALBANY AND UTICA, NY – SUNY Polytechnic Institute’s (SUNY Poly’s) year-over-year rankings by U.S. News & World Report continue to remain consistently high, with the institution named 12th in its “Best Regional Universities-North” ranking. Additionally, SUNY Poly earned 2nd for the “Top Public Schools” Regional Universities-North ranking and was once again ranked in the top five for “Best Value Colleges” for Regional Universities-North. In the same regional category, SUNY Poly jumped 45 places to rank 10th in “Social Mobility,” which recognizes colleges that advance this critical effort by successfully enrolling and graduating economically disadvantaged students.

SUNY Poly is also proud to be ranked 5th in “Best Colleges for Veterans,” up one position from the institution’s 2020 rankings in the Regional Universities-North category. Notably, SUNY Poly’s Utica campus is in close proximity to both the Air Force Research Laboratory—Information Directorate in Rome, New York, and the U.S. Army’s Fort Drum military reservation.

"These rankings reflect SUNY Poly’s continued ability to offer a world-class education in the science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), and liberal arts fields,” said Dr. Grace Wang, Interim President of SUNY Polytechnic Institute. “We are honored by U.S. News & World Report’s recognition of our wide-ranging academic and research achievements and the dedication of our faculty, staff, and students who make SUNY Poly an incredible institution.”

SUNY Poly is included in the Regional Universities-North category and placed 12th overall out of 176 ranked universities. The annual rankings by U.S. News and World Report categorize colleges and universities based upon their Carnegie Classification, created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. U.S. News & World Report maintains 10 different ranking categories, each with different weights assigned to them to determine the final institution positions. These categories include graduation and retention, social mobility, and faculty and financial resources, among others.

“The 2021 U.S. News and World Report rankings share how SUNY Poly provides a quality education at a great value to students,” said SUNY Poly’s Interim Provost Dr. Steven Schneider. “SUNY Poly facilitates learning in highly relevant subjects, with flexible online degree programs and partnerships that offer unique experiences.”

Over the past year, SUNY Poly has continued to progress while maintaining steady enrollment of more than 3,000 students. For example:

  • The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) awarded SUNY Poly reaccreditation for its College of Business Management programs.
  • SUNY Poly also received continuing accreditation by ABET for its Mechanical Engineering and Nanoscale Engineering programs.
  • The Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM) awarded continuing accreditation for seven years to SUNY Poly’s Health Information Management baccalaureate program.

SUNY Poly has also been working to make obtaining both baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate degrees easier through increased online distance learning opportunities and via partnerships with several institutions, including SUNY Upstate Medical University, Rome Memorial Hospital, Mohawk Valley Community College, Herkimer County Community College, and Schenectady County Community College.
