Child psychiatrist and author David Rettew, M.D., will deliver the annual Psi Chi lecture at SUNYIT April 9 starting at 3 p.m. in the Student Center multipurpose room. Rettew is associate professor of psychiatry and pediatrics at the University of Vermont College of Medicine and the author of “Child Temperament: New Thinking About the Boundary Between Traits and Illness.” His lecture, presented by SUNYIT’s Psi Chi chapter and the Oneida County Stop ACEs Committee, is entitled “Personality or Mental Illness? Understanding the Links between Traits and Disorders.” It is free and open to the public.

DavidRettew.jpg After earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, Rettew worked at the National Institute of Mental Health. He then received a medical degree from the University of Vermont; adult and child psychiatry training followed at Harvard Medical School within the Massachusetts General and McLean Hospital program. A member of the University of Vermont faculty since 2002, he divides his time between clinical, teaching and research activities. His main research interest is the role of temperament and personality factors in childhood psychiatric disorders. Rettew has more than 100 published journal articles, chapters, and scientific abstracts on a variety of child mental health topics.

Founded more than 70 years ago, Psi Chi is the national honor society in psychology. Its purpose is to encourage, stimulate, and maintain excellence in scholarship, and advance the science of psychology.
