SUNYIT will present the 18th annual Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) lecture on March 27, 1 p.m., in Kunsela Hall’s multipurpose room. Jamie Dangler, associate professor of sociology at SUNY Cortland, will be the featured speaker. The title of her lecture is: “Applying Sociology to the Practical World: A Case Study in the Use of Sociological Concepts and Analysis in Efforts to Advance Family-Friendly Workplace Policies.”

Dangler will discuss the ways sociological concepts and analysis were used in efforts to build support for paid family leave and other policies to accommodate women and men who need to balance work and family demands. She will highlight the grassroots organizing effort that developed within the union movement more than 10 years ago and how that effort emerged in the context of a broader national and international effort to address family leave and work-family balance as a fundamental workers' issue.

Dangler holds doctoral and master’s degrees in sociology from Binghamton University; she is also a graduate of SUNY Cortland. Author of the 1994 book “Hidden in the Home: the Role of Waged Homework in the Modern World-Economy,” she has written numerous articles and book chapters on subjects in her field.

AKD is the international sociology honor society; undergraduate membership is open to sociology majors or students who demonstrate a serious interest in sociology. SUNYIT offers an undergraduate program in sociology.
