SUNY Poly College of Engineering Offering New Graduate Degree Program in Response to Changing Workforce and Industry Demands
Master’s in Systems Engineering is one of few such programs offered nationwide
UTICA, NY – Continuing its mission to offer students unparalleled academic programming, SUNY Polytechnic Institute is proud to launch its Master of Science degree in Systems Engineering, recently approved by the New York State Education Department and the State University of New York.
The 30 credit degree program will provide students with enhanced theoretical and application-oriented skills and is designed for graduates with already-existing technical capabilities and an appreciation of engineering across multiple disciplines.
“This new degree program is a testament to SUNY Poly’s ongoing commitment to providing cutting edge academic opportunities to its students and preparing them for the demands of the 21st century global economy,” said Dr. Baghat Sammakia, Interim President at SUNY Poly. “The MS in Systems Engineering, like all of our graduate and undergraduate offerings, is rooted in experiential, hands-on learning and we are grateful to SUNY and the State Education Department for their support and approval of this program, which maintains our leadership in growing and preparing the high-tech workforce of the future.”
“The new Master of Science in Systems Engineering degree program prepares students to oversee the design and implementation of complex systems. Strengthening manufacturing, research, and development in the upstate region is increasingly dependent on systems experts working in multidisciplinary teams,” said Dr. William Durgin, SUNY Poly Provost. “Graduates from many engineering backgrounds are welcomed to systems engineering, which provides a wonderful opportunity for career advancement.”
Systems Engineering develops a critical discipline that is in high demand in the industry. SUNY Poly joins just a handful of institutions nationwide that offer a graduate program supporting that discipline. Graduates of the program will be prepared for rewarding careers with job titles such as chief engineer, system engineer, project engineer, and program manager. The addition of the MS in Systems Engineering at SUNY Poly will strengthen the competitiveness of high technology industries in the Mohawk Valley region and throughout New York State. Local companies that currently employ systems engineers include the Air Force Research Laboratory, Assured Information Security, Intelligent Automation Inc., BAE Systems, Booz Allen Hamilton and Syracuse Research Corporation.
“I am very excited about the approval of the new MS in Systems Engineering which is the first graduate program in the Department of Engineering,” said Dr. Andrew Wolfe. “I want to thank Associate Professor Dr. Timothy Busch for all the effort he put into creating the program. This program will be the springboard for additional graduate programs in the College of Engineering. We look forward to providing educational opportunities to students in Central New York and the Capital District.”

The control aspect addresses the design and implementation of automatic decision making within the system.”

“Some that we might be familiar with include the health care system, transportation system, electric power grid, logistics distribution such as Amazon or Walmart. Familiar, but less understood systems might include your smartphone, PS4 or car.”
