The state announced Wednesday that photonics companies Avogy and Photonica will invest $1.6 billion in operations in Rochester, creating an estimated more than 1,400 jobs.

The companies will set up shop in part in Eastman Business Park, where Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Vice President Joe Biden announced last year an Integrated Photonics Institute for Manufacturing Innovation would be established.

In a Q&A with reporters after the morning announcement, Cuomo credited Albany’s nanotechnology success with being the groundwork for convincing tech companies to locate elsewhere in New York

“The secret formula here was actually invented in Albany with the nanotechnology explosion, which has transformed the Albany region,” he said. “International companies come to Albany now for this ‘nanotechnology.'”

Cuomo said with the state building a nanotechnology facility with a clean room and research and development capabilities, companies are enticed to take advantage of such a facility.
