The irony is that much of the exciting growth with the new tech economy is because of what is already happening in New York. Just two years since its formation, SUNY Polytechnic Institute has gone from relative obscurity to No. 18 on the list of regional Northeast universities in the latest U.S. News & World Report college rankings. Nanoscale science research at its Albany campus is creating the technology that will help propel the new tech economy. This week, GlobalFoundries, the sprawling computer chip factory in Malta, announced plans for a multibillion dollar investment to start making the seven nanometer chips that will be the engines of the next generation of new tech businesses.
