About a dozen years ago local officials persuaded Sematech Corp., a computer chip research consortium, to abandon plans to expand in Austin, Texas, and open a facility at what has become the State University of New York College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE).
Naysayers mocked economic development plans that featured stodgy upstate New York as a center for cutting-edge semiconductor research.
The naysayers will have to find something else to mock, because slowly but surely the Capital Region has become a national and global player in several tech areas.
