Times Union: Nakamura’s visit to Fab 8 part of Tech Valley’s
rise

Thursday’s visit to GlobalFoundries’ Fab 8 computer chip factory in Malta by Nobel Laureate Shuji Nakamura is expected to be interesting from a science and technology perspective. Nakamura, a professor at UC Santa Barbara, is the inventor of the blue light emitting diode, which helped to usher in the use of high efficient LEDs for lighting and electronic screens using pure gallium nitride substrate.

But Nakamura has also played an indirect role in the rise of upstate New York’s new high-tech manufacturing sector. The LED company he helped to create, Soraa, is building a factory in suburban Syracuse in partnership with SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Albany.
