Times Union: SUNY Poly honors Saratoga Springs school district

Posted on October 1, 2014 | By Eric Anderson The Saratoga Springs City School District is among three districts statewide that were honored Wednesday by SUNY Polytechnic Institute and the New York State School Boards Association  for their programs encouraging the development of STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — skills among their students.

Saratoga Springs was recognized for its “Educating Young Engineers” program, which teaches basic engineering concepts to elementary students in special Saturday classes and has led to support for introducing elementary engineering content in the regular curriculum.

Also honored were the Chenango Forks School District in Broome County for its “Chenango Forks STEAM Academy” that offered internships to juniors and seniors matched to their career and intellectual interests; and the Mineola Union Free School District in Nassau County for its “STEMineola” program that with the help of a science education company, Knowing Science, created hands-on laboratory activities for students in grades three through seven.

The “Be the Change for Kids” Innovation Awards were presented during ceremonies Wednesday in Albany.
