From years of promises, to doubts, to hope and now to reality, the nanotechnology site in Marcy is taking shape.

Pointing to visual progress, Steven DiMeo, executive director of Mohawk Valley EDGE said, “It is happening.”

Site preparation has continued during the mild winter on the SUNY Polytechnic Institute site where Austria-based AMS will open a chip fabrication plant. Beginning this spring, a three-story, 360,000- to 450,000-square-foot 300 mm wafer fabrication facility will begin to take shape along with a two-story, 100,000-square-foot administration facility.

The company will invest $2 billion in the first phase of the project and expects to employ about 1,500 people. It is expected to be operational by the end of 2017.

“We are currently excavating and hauling overburden material from the site to support the rock-cut and foundations-footings construction for the project,” DiMeo said in an email. “The plan is to have the project ready for tool installation in fall 2017 and to support the first wafer ramp by the second quarter of 2018.

“This is a high-profile economic development initiative of global significance that reaffirms New York’s position as a leader in nanotechnology and advanced electronics,” he added.

Fort Schuyler Management Corp., which is handling construction of the AMS building, issued the request for proposals for a project development team and has received proposals that are being vetted and will make a selection for project implementation, DiMeo said.
