Twenty years can seem a long time in the scheme of things, but when it comes to planning for community growth, it’s a mere blink of the eye. That’s why leaders in the Town of Marcy are wise to be pro-active as it continues its effort to deal with all facets of nanotechnology development at SUNY Polytechnic Institute, including transportation options to and from what otherwise is a pretty secluded campus.

The town started preparing for this more than 20 years ago when it began building infrastructure — 100 miles’ worth of sewers were completed in eight years — and since, the build-up around the college has been significant. Updating the town master plan is an ongoing process and most recently began examining walkability among transportation options to destinations such as workplaces, schools, stores, restaurants and amenities.
Remember, what happens in Marcy won’t stay in Marcy. The development of nanotechnology will have a ripple effect throughout the region.
