Yes, the Computer Chip Commercialization Center (aka Quad-C) is happening.

Yes, it will be home to a division of GE.

No, it will not happen overnight.

“You’re not going to wake up one day and it’s all going to be done,” said David Doyle, spokesman of the SUNY College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering.

There still is a bit more work to be done, and the building is scheduled to be completed in May. Eventually, GE expects to be in full-scale production in 2017 and to employ 470 people at that time. Another 450 jobs are expected over the next 10 years.

“We’re looking forward to the next phase of our plans for the new packaging facility when Quad-C is ready this spring,” said Todd Alhart, GE Global Research spokesman. “This will involve ordering equipment and installing new manufacturing lines.

In the interim, we’ve been working closely with SUNY Polytechnic to identify equipment for the new facility and also talking with prospective partners to come and work with us in Utica.”

After Quad-C is finished, the process of tool installation will be phased in over time.
