WUTR: Equifax's Cybersecurity Breach
Nearly two weeks after Equifax's announcement of a security breach, affecting nearly 150 million people, many of us are still left wondering if we're safe.
A cybersecurity professor and an economic crime professor say this is a cybersecurity breach on steroids and they've never seen anything quite like this.
"Cybersecurity breaches happen every day - T.J. Maxx, Target...it's happened and customers are affected," explains Dr. John Marsh, Department Chair of the Network and Computer Security Department at SUNY Poly. "But the data breach at Equifax affects anyone who's ever had a credit check. Anyone's who's ever had a credit card, or who's ever tried to apply for a loan has been affected."
Dr. Marsh says a company like Equifax stores data and keeps it safe and provides it to those who need it when we apply for credit. Two other similar entities are TransUnion and Experian.
"To have a company like this not patch their systems is just unbelievable," Dr. Marsh says.
Equifax announced their vulnerability on March 7th.
