Course Descriptions
CTC 250 Survey 1: Introductory course in surveying methods and theory. Topics include fundamentals of surveying methods appropriate for land measurement and construction layout. The use of automatic levels and total stations is required. Two hours of lecture and four hours of laboratory per week. Prerequisites: MAT 120 or equivalent. (4 credits, in-person)
CTC 251 Survey 2: This course emphasizes plane and route surveying theory and techniques. The focus will be on circular curves, vertical curves, profiling, cross-sectioning, realignment of circular curves, spiral curves, earthwork calculations, construction stakeout procedures for highways, railroads and construction sites. Students must be able to use EXCEL (or similar spreadsheet) to develop models and complete homework. Prerequisites: MAT 120, CTC 250 or CE 210, or an Introductory Surveying course. (4 credits, online)
CTC350 Boundary Law 2: This is the first in a sequence of two courses in legal terminology, interests in real property, and real property boundaries. Emphasis is placed on the Public Lands system used in most states. Off campus research is required. (4 credits, online)
CTC 351 Boundary Law 2: This second course in the sequence of two courses focuses on New York State laws and case law that affect the surveyor. Topics include governmental organization, zoning, municipal, education, highway, health, business and real-property law, and developmental planning. Off-campus research is required. Prerequisites: CTC350. (4 credits, online)
IS 341 Geographic Information Systems (4 credits - hybrid): Students will learn the concepts and components of a geographic information system (GIS) as well as the essential skills of operating a functional GIS through the use of a GIS software package. (4-credits, hybrid)
