PMHNP (Advanced Certificate) - Admission Requirements

The advanced certificate in PMHNP program is only available as a part-time, fall admission program.

Any out-of-state applicant should be advised that SUNY Polytechnic Institute is a NC-SARA member for online education. Guidance from NC-SARA for professional programs can be found on the NC-SARA website.    

Clinical placements may be possible in other states; applicants are responsible for contacting their home state regulatory agency for nursing practice for information prior submitting their application. Clinical placements are available in New York State for all potential applicants.

ALL applicants must provide:

  • evidence of a current unencumbered license as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) in New York State OR
  • evidence of a current unencumbered license as a Registered Professional Nurse in the state where they work and current registration AND
  • copies of all licenses and registrations (active, suspended, terminated or voluntarily made inactive) obtained for Registered Professional Nurse and any APRN specialty from any and all jurisdictions or states in which a license/registration is or has ever been held

There are three different pathways for admission. Select the '+' next to each pathway to view specific admissions requirements.

The applicant must:

  • Hold an MS, MSN degree in the clinical specialty of FNP, ANP, Women’s Health or Pediatrics.
  • Have a graduate program GPA 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale from an accredited nursing program.
  • Be licensed and nationally certified in a current NP specialty
  • Provide evidence of completing the following non-credit course work: Child Abuse Identification, Infection Control, Prescription Writing
  • Have a minimum of one year of recent work experience in the APRN role and demonstrated commitment to the profession through leadership activity, participation in workplace governance, health related community service and active membership in professional organizations.
  • Submit three letters of recommendation from professional nurses including a nurse academician that speak to the student’s ability to succeed in an advanced clinical practice program.
  • Submit an essay responding to question(s) addressing career goals relative to advanced practice in psychiatric mental health. • Submit current resume or curriculum vitae.
  • Participate in a face-to-face interview with a member of the nurse practitioner faculty member.
  • Provide official transcripts from all colleges attended post high school graduation.

Transcript review for eligible transfer credits includes:

  • Review of Clinical Nursing Master’s Degree to satisfy NUR 500, NUR 503, NUR 585, NUR 521, NUR 531, NUR 555, NUR 568, NUR 570, NUR 572.
  • Potential transfer credit: NUR 595.
  • Gap analysis for 3 Year requirement: NUR 521, NUR 555, NUR 568, and NUR 570.

The applicant must:

  • Hold an MS, MSN degree in nursing and completed a graduate level in a clinical nursing APRN (Advanced Practice Registered Nurse) program such as Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Midwife or Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
  • Have a graduate program GPA 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale from an accredited nursing program.
  • Be licensed and nationally certified in an APRN role
  • Provide evidence of completing non-credit coursework in the following: Child Abuse Identification, Infection Control, and Prescription Writing if authorized by the state of licensure.
  • Have a minimum of one year of recent work experience in the APRN role and demonstrated commitment to the profession through leadership activity, participation in workplace governance, health related community service and active membership in professional organizations.
  • Submit three letters of recommendation from professional nurses including a nurse academician that speak to the student’s ability to succeed in an advanced clinical practice program.
  • Submit an essay responding to question(s) addressing career goals relative to advanced practice in psychiatric mental health.
  • Submit current resume or curriculum vitae.
  • Participate in a face-to-face interview with a member of the nurse practitioner faculty member.
  • Provide official transcripts from all colleges attended post high school graduation.

  • Gap Analysis for NUR 531, NUR 572, and NUR 595.
  • Gap Analysis for 3 Year requirement: NUR 521, NUR 555, NUR 568, and NUR 570.

The applicant must:

  • Hold an MS, MSN, MA degree in nursing from such programs as Nursing Education, Nursing Leadership or Nursing Administration.
  • Have a graduate program GPA 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale from an accredited nursing program
  • Provide evidence of completing the following non-credit course work: Child Abuse Identification, Infection Control.
  • Have a minimum of one year of recent work experience in the advanced nursing role as an educator, nurse leader or administrator; and, demonstrated commitment to the profession through leadership activity, participation in workplace governance, health related community service and active membership in professional organizations.
  • Submit three letters of recommendation from professional nurses including a nurse academician that speak to the student’s ability to succeed in an advanced clinical practice program.
  • Submit an essay responding to question(s) addressing career goals relative to advanced practice in psychiatric mental health.
  • Submit current resume or curriculum vitae.
  • Participate in a face-to-face interview with a member of the nurse practitioner faculty member.
  • Provide official transcripts from all colleges attended post high school graduation.

Application Materials Checklist

To apply submit the following materials to the SUNY Polytechnic Institute Graduate Admissions Office, 100 Seymour Road, Utica, NY 13502:

  • Online Application for Graduate Admission with a $60 application fee*
  • Candidates who have earned a graduate degree or graduate certificate at SUNY Poly will fill out the Readmission Application to add a second degree with $30 fee.
  • Official transcript(s) from colleges previously attended reflecting completion of a BS in nursing and/or an MS in nursing, and an undergraduate statistics course
  • Three academic or professional recommendations (two must be from nurse academicians): Share this link with your recommenders to be able to submit an electronic reference for you
  • Writing Sample adhering to specific guidelines
  • Resume (can be submitted via email to graduate@sunypoly.edu)

*The application fee is waived for military veterans, active-duty military, reserve and guard members, and their spouses and dependents; SUNY Poly alumni; and current matriculated students.
