Magnolia Solar Corp., a solar cell technology developer with ties to SUNY Polytechnic Institute, was awarded three patents earlier this week. Ashok Sood, CEO, said it is the company's latest step toward growing the business to commercialization.

Magnolia holds patents for more flexible, lightweight, high-efficiency solar cells that Sood said will maximize power generation in space, ground-based, and air-based defense systems. The six-person company is developing technology that makes solar panels more flexible as well as able to absorb more energy.

"The focus has been to develop exciting technology and being able to absorb more energy from the sun and anti-deflection coding," Sood said. "We're figuring out how to get more energy out of solar cells and solar panels than people already get."
