ALBANY—A major Pennsylvania-based semiconductor materials manufacturer will colocate with SUNY Polytechnic Institute and SEMATECH researchers at the university’s Albany campus to develop new nanotech-friendly chip manufacturing processes, the school will announce tomorrow .

Air Products, a chemical and aerosol materials manufacturer based in Allentown, will work with researchers to research new chemical-mechanical planarization “slurries,” mixtures of abrasives and chemicals designed to make semiconductor wafers perfectly flat and ready for etching and other manufacturing processes. The company will work out of the Chemical Mechanical Planarization Center launched by the school in conjunction with SEMATECH, and international consortium of semiconductor manufacturers and research firms.

The research efforts are expected to draw $5 million in “multiple party investments” within three years, and “create or support 50 jobs,” including 30 specific to SUNY Poly’s Albany College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering, according to SUNY Poly’s announcement.
