CHAMPLAIN — Five local students have discovered they can hold their own in a new dimension of competition.

Earlier this fall, a team comprising Northeastern Clinton High School students Samantha Mosier and Keagan MacKinnon, Plattsburgh High School ninth-grader Kaleb Pecoraro, Peru High School 11th-grader Zackary Raymond and SUNY Plattsburgh senior Justin Collins placed third in the first-ever Capital District 3-D Printathalon.

Held at SUNY Polytechnic Institute Colleges of Nanoscale Science and Engineering in Albany, the 24-hour event required participants to complete a design challenge using 3-D printers and related software.

“We went there with two (3-D) printers and some computers for designing, and we went there with no clue what we were going to do or anything like that," said MacKinnon, a 10th-grader.

"We just knew that it involved designing something and then printing it out, and we had 24 hours to complete it.”
