Prof. Tom Steele, Dept. of Physics and Engineering Physics, University of Saskatchewan,  Saskatoon, Canada

Dr. Tom Steele is a full Professor of Physics  at the Department of Physics and Engineering Physics of the University of Saskatchewan  in Saskatoon, Canada.    His area of research is theoretical elementary particle physics that extends over a broad range of topics and has resulted in more than 130 well-respected publications in this field and a sustained  funding from the Natural  Sciences and Research Council of Canada (NSERC).    Some of his former Ph.D. students and postdocs  are now faculty members in various universities in Canada and abroad. He has visited SUNYIT several times over the past 12 years (including his most recent visit in May 2012) for research collaboration and for giving talks at some of the particle physics conferences at SUNYIT.

"Symmetry: A unifying principle in theoretical physics"
Abstract:
The role of symmetry as a unifying principle in the theoretical description of fundamental physical phenomena will be reviewed, including conservation laws in classical mechanics, special and general relativity, quantum mechanics, and the Standard Model of elementary particle interactions.  The culmination of these ideas will be a discussion of the epic discovery of the Higgs particle and our recent research on new scenarios for the Higgs and dark matter particles.
