Rome Sentinel: A worthy role model as ‘Woman of the Year’

Congratulations to SUNY Poly’s Dr. Kathryn Stam, a professor of anthropology, who has been saluted in the Mohawk Valley with the title of “Woman of the Year.”

In conjunction with Women’s History Month, Dr. Stam was honored with other community members by the Mohawk Valley Chapter of New York State Women Inc. at the “Women of the Year” awards dinner March 20 in New Hartford.

Dr. Stam was particularly praised for her dedication to students, education and her community, according to SUNY Poly Interim President Dr. Bahgat Sammakia. Her efforts with the refugee communities that support individuals as they begin new lives in the Mohawk Valley was also noted.

Dr. Stam’s educational background includes a doctorate from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University, master’s from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and a bachelor’s from the University of Vermont. She also serves as president of the board for the Midtown Utica Community Center, whose missions is to foster inclusive community participation by providing an environmentally sound facility for arts, recreation, celebration and locally based human services.

She also has other numerous awards and honors too numerous to be listed here.
