New York City – State University of New York Chancellor Kristina Johnson will lead a conversation with activists Judy and Dennis Shepard, the parents of Matthew Shepard, this Thursday, November 7, 2019, at SUNY Global Center. The Shepards have fought tirelessly for change, leading the charge to pass laws that better protect LGBTQ people. With that progress in jeopardy, Chancellor Johnson will facilitate a personal and impactful discussion about Matthew Shepard’s legacy, his parents’ brave and exhaustive advocacy efforts, and what’s still at stake today. SUNY Trustee Richard Socarides will join Chancellor Johnson along with educators, alumni, and students.
“The Shepard’s bravery in the face of unimaginable grief, and their determination to turn pain and loss into advocacy and action have made our world a safer, more inclusive, fair, and accepting place,” said SUNY Chancellor Johnson. “Their resolve is profoundly inspiring. I am looking forward to an impactful and personal conversation that highlights the continued importance of their work today.”
