MARCY, N.Y. -- Ground was officially broken Wednesday at the site of SUNY Polytechnic Institute’s new computer chip fab at the Marcy Nanocenter.

"The shovels have been in the ground, clearing this land. Today was kind of the more ceremonial groundbreaking if you will," said Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente.

"No matter how we look at today, we know that this is truly a transformative opportunity and moment for this community," said Senator Joseph Griffo.

It'll be home to AMS AG'S advanced sensor manufacturing, and it is expected to create more than a thousand jobs in the Mohawk Valley.

"This is a game-changing investment for the region," said Mohawk Valley EDGE President Steve DiMeo, "the investments taking place here at the QUAD-C, the advancements here at the Marcy Nanotechnology site, and in addition, the room for growth here. There are some strategic investments taking place across the state."

DiMeo added that things are coming along as planned.

"Construction will continue over the course of this year through next year," he said, "and with the plan to turn the fab over to the company by the second quarter of 2018."

More than 4,000 jobs are expected to be created over the next 10 years through Governor Andrew Cuomo's "Nano Utica" initiative.
