BessTech, a lithium-ion battery component start-up that was spun out of SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Albany several years ago, has been granted the first patent for its nanowire electrode technology.

The patent was approved by the Japan Patent Office, which will provide BessTech with a potential advantage in the Japanese market, as well as in the United States and other parts of the world where the company is also seeking patent protection.

BessTech claims its technology can produce batteries with up to 40 percent more electricity storage than those made using existing technologies, which have remained constant for about three decades.

"We really want to take that leap forward," said CEO Fernando Gomez-Baquero told the Times Union. "And we want to bring all of this here. We want to bring it to New York state."
