One in 20 inventions in the semiconductor industry take place in the Capital Region, according to a new study by the Center for Economic Growth.

The study found that computer-chip related patents awarded in 2017 by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to Capital Region inventors were also up 18.8 percent over 2016, another indicator that the region's semiconductor industry is on the rise.

The CEG study counted 1,301 semiconductor patents issued to local scientists, up from 1,095 in 2016.

Based on the data collected by CEG, IBM researchers, who have their main semiconductor research facilities at SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Albany, have been extremely busy, having been awarded 741 semiconductor patents in 2017. That's up from 397 semiconductor patents in 2016.
