U.S. News and World Report published its annual rankings of colleges and universities Tuesday, and several Capital Region-area schools earned distinctions.

Skidmore College was noted as the best A-plus School for B students, a designation given to top-rated schools that often accept students with less-than-stellar standardized test scores and grades.

The private college in Saratoga Springs also ranked No. 34 among high school guidance counselors who were asked to rate the best undergraduate liberal arts colleges; No. 41 among national liberal arts colleges in general; and No. 59 among "best value" schools, or schools with high-quality academic offerings at a comparatively low net cost.

SUNY Polytechnic Institute, which has campuses in Albany and Utica, rose three spots to rank No. 15 among the best regional universities in the northern U.S. It held onto its No. 3 spot among top public regional universities in the North, and also ranked sixth in the best colleges for veterans among regional universities in the North category.
