The new research center for Applied Materials represents an $850 million bet that SUNY Polytechnic Institute was the right spot in which to carry out its critical research.

The center is known as the Materials Engineering Technology Accelerator, or META Center, that is designed to help computer chip manufacturers prototype new materials and devices. It will employ 400 researchers.
