Alain Kaloyeros, who is spearheading the state’s nanotechnology master plan, credited Mario Cuomo with laying the groundwork for the nanotechnology corridor.

SUNY Polytechnic Institute is getting the $1.5 billion Computer Chip Commercialization Center, which is set to open in 2015.

Not only did Cuomo create the groundbreaking Centers for Advanced Technology program, and fund the construction of the first building on the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering, but he personally interviewed the young Kaloyeros for his first job with SUNY.

Kaloyeros said being interviewed in 1988 by Mario Cuomo for the assistant professorship “truly blew my mind” and cemented his decision to come to SUNY.

“What really struck me were the depth of his intellect, the intensity of his passion, his down to earth engagement style and his sense of humor,” Kaloyeros said in an email.

Mario Cuomo already had a vision for the role of higher education in New York’s competitiveness.

“My silver lining in this loss is the fact that his vision and blueprint for economic vibrancy in New York are now being carried out by a leader of the same caliber, his own son, Andrew,” Kaloyeros said..."
