Utica Observer-Dispatch: Living here ... working there

Offering the best of city and country living, having a number of bedroom communities in the Mohawk Valley can be a boon.

With bigger projects such as the Quad-C nanotechnology center at SUNY Polytechnic Institute eventually expected to bring in more than 1,000 jobs and the possibility of thousands more if a chip manufacturer sets up shop, it won’t just be urban areas experiencing an influx in population.

The adjoining bedroom communities also might see some spillover for workers looking for a more rural atmosphere to live and potentially raise a family.

Brian Thomas, commissioner for Utica’s Urban Planning and Economic Development office, defined a bedroom community as “a community that primarily has purely residential value.”

Though there might be a few businesses, the vast majority of residents in a bedroom community will be working elsewhere, usually in a more commercial or urban center.
