UTICA – For lively theatrical performances, some area residents head to New York City and the Great White Way.

And to find some rockin’ concerts, many trek to Buffalo or Albany or Syracuse.

But as the area sits on the edge of a nanotechnology induced resurgence, all of that could look different in the not too distant future.

GE and Austria based AMS are going to open nanotechnology enterprises in Marcy. GE will be moving into the Computer Chip Commercialization Center at SUNY Polytechnic Institute. AMS is building a computer chip manufacturing plant. Both hope to be in operation in 2017.

That likely will translate into thousands of jobs, dozens of housing complexes around the Mohawk Valley and plenty of auxiliary businesses.

But what about entertainment options?

The answer might lie east along the Thruway in the Capital Region. Malta experienced a similar rebirth in the late 2000s and spurred growth in that area.

“ Speaking just Malta, there have been more music venues, far more than they started out with before 2007, so much so that it’s actually causing some problems for neighbors,” said Anthony Tozzi, building and planning coordinator in Malta. “ And for night life, people go to Saratoga, Schenectady and Albany for folks looking to get their culture.”
