Monday is possibly the biggest holiday for math fans everywhere.

It's Pi Day!

Scientists and faculty from SUNY Polytechnic are helping local students celebrate.

March 14 corresponds with 3.14, the first three digits of Pi.

Members of SUNY Polytechnic are making sure to use the day to get local students interested in math and science.

Pi is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter.

Every Pi Day, SUNY Polytechnic renames itself “SUNY Pi” to celebrate the mathematical constant.

So this year, a team of scientists and faculty are heading to three local schools to share their love of math and science with students.

Students were able to learn about Pi, compete against each other for who could remember pi out to the highest number of places and take part in other science activates.

Students were able to measure pi with different tools and equipment -- and learn about other science fields like circuitry, nanobiology and solar power.

Those on SUNY Poly's "Pi Patrol" also say that there's a lot of stem career opportunities not just locally, but around the state and they want to make sure students know about them.

“It's very important that we educate these students about those opportunities because they really have a bright future in these industries. So we really feel that it's important at SUNY Poly to start an understanding of the kinds of career opportunities that are available to these kids,” explained Diana Dumesnil, the assistant vice president of student affairs.

The "Pi Patrol" was making stops at Mont Pleasant Middle School in Schenectady, Troy Middle School and William S. Hackett Middle School in Albany.
