It is time to think about SURP! If you are interested in working with students on a project in the coming summer, please submit a SURP project to the link below! The deadline for sending the project outlines is Wednesday, Dec 31, 2025 by 5pm.

In the summer of 2026, SUNY Poly will once again offer a summer undergraduate research program. The program is scheduled to run for ten weeks from Tuesday, May 26 through Friday, July 31, 2026. Participating students will be presenting their research work in the poster session scheduled on Friday, July 31 2026 (tentatively).

Note: This year we will continue to seek backing from the SUNY Summer Research Excellence Fund and other fundings to increase the number of supported projects. In 2025, the prioritized areas include Artificial Intelligence, Microelectronics / Semiconductors, Biotechnology / Bioengineering, Quantum Information Science, and Climate and Sustainability. All research topics are welcome, and if you have project ideas in these 5 areas please do not hesitate to send the outlines!

Students and faculty mentors can participate in different ways, as outlined below:

  • SURP-Funded. Students would be paid to do research at minimum wage ($15.50/hr) for 40-hrs/week. Funds are limited; therefore, faculty will need to apply for these positions. Projects will be selected for funding by the SURP Team and the SUNY Poly Institute (SPI) deans based on: Student interest, research description, and mentoring plans. Although the SURP team will not advertise the positions outside of SPI, it is possible for non-SPI students to be funded by this program.

  • Faculty-Grant Funded SURP. Students are paid from faculty grants. Not including indirect charges, the cost to faculty would be approximately $6572 for in-state SPI students.

  • Research for Credit. Students can conduct summer research for credit with the faculty mentor listed as the instructor. If a student is not a SUNY Poly student, they would take the credits on a non-matriculated basis.

  • Industry partners. We work with industrial partners every year. If there are potential industrial partners or community groups that you believe may want to sponsor (or co-sponsor) your SURP project, please respond to the question provided requesting that information. This helps us understand which companies/groups we should reach out to and promote your work.

Each professor can propose as many projects as they wish. Please fill out and submit the SURP Faculty Mentor Application for each of your projects by 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 31st at the link

(Note: you will need your Google signed in with your campus account to access the form.)

We will compile the projects in the booklet available on SURP webpage for students to apply. The project descriptions will aid the 2026 SURP committee to align the student’s and prospective advisor’s research interests in the initial stages of the matching process. The project description is also an integral part of the SUNY CSREF proposal to be submitted. Thus your proposed projects and your students’ applications will help the proposal be more competitive for supporting more students to participate in SURP.

If you have any questions, please direct them to Dr. Shing Chi Leung (leungs@sunypoly.edu) or Ms. Marye Ianno (iannom@sunypoly.edu).
