Research by SUNY Poly Professor of Nanobioscience Dr. Susan Sharfstein, along with researchers from TEGA Therapeutics, is featured on the cover of and published in American Pharmaceutical Review.

"Advancing to Recombinant Heparin” discusses the challenges to the global production of heparin, “a potent anticoagulant that has been used clinically to manage blood clotting since 1935,” including supply chain concerns. The article looks at the challenges to be overcome to “produce recombinant heparin from mastocytoma cells,” including producing it in an economically competitive manner, given that the currently used, crude, porcine-derived heparin costs only ~$25/gram. However, the authors note that niche applications where higher quality is needed, such as cardiac bypass surgery, would justify higher costs and may provide an initial entry into the market.
