The use of electric scooters has increased worldwide, creating a “growing interest in understanding different aspects of e-scooters trips and their impact on urban mobility.”

With this in mind, Dr. Abolfazl Karimpour, an assistant professor of Transportation Engineering at SUNY Polytechnic Institute, has published research in collaboration with two University of Louisville professors titled, “A data-driven approach to estimating dockless electric scooter service areas,” in the Journal of Transport Geography.

The study proposes a data-driven approach to constructing service areas for e-scooters using origin-destination trip data. It also examines the relationship between built environments and urbanism characteristics and e-scooter service areas.

The findings suggest that residential properties, block length, and walkability contribute most to the size of the e-scooter service area, providing a method to estimate e-scooter access to goods and services.
