Assistant Professor of Network + Cybersecurity Mahmoud Badr and Associate Professor and Department Chair Hisham Kholidy, with researchers from Benha University, George Mason University, Idaho State University, the Center for Advanced Energy Studies, and Tennessee Technological University published, "Review of the Data-Driven Methods for Electricity Fraud Detection in Smart Metering Systems," in Energies 2023.
The article seeks to address problems stemming from how "malicious consumers tamper with their (smart meters) SMs to report low readings to reduce their bills. This problem, known as electricity fraud, causes tremendous financial losses to electric utility companies worldwide and threatens the power grid’s stability."
Ultimately, the research group provides "recommendations for future research directions to enhance electricity fraud detection," while also providing paths toward greater security and privacy for consumers.
