Science Signaling published, “Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase 1B Regulates miR-208b-Argonaute 2 Association and Thyroid Hormone Responsiveness in Cardiac Hypertrophy,” collaborative research by Associate Professor of Nanobioscience and Director of the Redox Biology and Signal Transduction Laboratory, Dr. Ben Boivin. The research was undertaken in collaboration with researchers from the Montreal Heart Institute, McGill University, Université de Montréal and Columbia University.

The research article, featured on the cover of the journal, shares how “increased production of cellular oxidants plays an essential role in the pathogenesis of cardiac hypertrophy by inactivating protein tyrosine phosphatases.” The team’s search to identify redox-sensitive targets that contribute to redox signaling led to their illustrating that protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) activity “is cardioprotective and that redox signaling is linked to thyroid hormone responsiveness and microRNA-mediated gene silencing in pathological hypertrophy.”
