A Mohawk Valley family that in 2011 underwent the horrific experience of losing a six year old girl in a violent and senseless crime appeared last week on the OWN Network's Dr. Phil show.

Allison Danough-Belius' six-year-old daughter, Lauren Belius, was stabbed to death in Belius' Sherrill home in 2011. A judge found David Trebilcock not responsible by reason of mental disease or defect in February of 2012. Since then, Danough-Belius has been crusading to change the law as it applies to certain defendants who, like Trebilcock, are found not responsible by reason of mental disease or defect.

On the show, which aired December 15, 2016, Danough discussed her daughter’s death and how she has learned to live differently and has dealt with a lot of criticism after the media picked up the story.

Over the course of the show, host Dr. Phil McGraw helped to bring awareness and healing to the family, including Lauren's brother, Nolan.

"Y ou know, also, sometimes, I  think you just kind of need a break for a family sometimes," McGraw said. "Y ou just need something to look forward to. W e heard that Nolan wants to be an engineer. Y ou just heard him talk about that. W e've been talking to the S tate University of New York, the SUNY Polytechnic Institute  and they would like to offer N olan a full scholarship to their week-long youth camp this summer. I t's all for engineering. A nd they would like to have him come as their guest and be part of their engineering camp."
