SUNY Poly student Lucas Nowlan was honored by the State University of New York Student Assembly (SUNY SA) at their Fall Conference in November, receiving the President’s Award for Community Service.

For the past three years, Nowlan, a Network and Computer Security major, has dedicated his life to improving the community one step at a time.

His main volunteer efforts are concentrated in advocating for the homeless and in the fire service. He is a bunk-in firefighter with the Maynard Fire Department in Marcy and has volunteered countless hours to help the homeless, serving meals, working with county officials to get them warm housing during cold nights, as well as providing clothing, and holding tutoring sessions.

“From firefighting to homelessness advocacy, it has been an honor to serve the community,” he said. “I look forward to what the future has in store for all the vibrant communities and people around us. I owe the world to everyone who has helped and supported me along the way and promise to continue my work in making the world a better place.”

SUNY SA President and Trustee Gio Harvey (a 2023 SUNY Poly alum and current University at Albany graduate student) said the following about Nowlan: “Lucas’s commitment to serving and uplifting others within the SUNY system has not only inspired his peers but also underscored the incredible potential we have as a united community. This award is a testament to his leadership, passion, and unwavering commitment to making a difference. I hope that Lucas and the SUNY Poly community take pride in this well-deserved recognition and continue to shine as a leader in our SUNY community and beyond.”
