The state of New York is making free food pantries a standard fixture on all its public college campuses.

The big focus is on the SUNY system.

Some local community colleges and universities are in the process of starting their own food pantries. It's a part of a nationwide effort to deal with rising college costs and the ability for some students to afford basics, such as food.

A recent study found that out of 43,000 students across the nation, attending two- and four-year colleges, 36 percent of those students are dealing with hunger issues.

Among community college students alone, nearly half of those students said they struggle to get enough food.

Some local community colleges are trying to combat the issue. Mohawk Valley Community College recently launched a food pantry for its students. Herkimer College is in the beginning stages of their food pantry, which they hope to implement in the upcoming fall semester.

At SUNY Polytechnic Institute, students work with local organizations to ensure food security for those who need it most.
