Course Evaluations

Course Evaluation System

  • SUNY Poly uses the IDEA Student Ratings of Instruction system, administered by Campus Labs, as part of our course evaluation process. The IDEA system is designed to provide analytics, resources and advice to improve student learning. Campus Labs provides additional information about the IDEA system.
  • All faculty interaction with IDEA is through a portal: https://sunypoly.campuslabs.com/faculty
  • Students access the system through a web portal specifically for SUNY Poly course evaluations. At that portal, students will be given access to any active course evaluations currently underway. SUNY Poly has a single window for course evaluations, and students will be able to see all courses selected for evaluation in the portal.
  • Faculty members can monitor response rates during the evaluation period, and will receive reports once evaluations are complete.

Selecting courses for evaluation

  • Courses (sections) are selected for evaluation based on a variety of criteria. All sections in the colleges of Business, Health Sciences and Nanoscale Science & Engineering are evaluated every semester. In the colleges of Arts + Sciences and Engineering, the following sections are evaluated:
  • All sections taught by adjuncts and lecturers, fall and spring
  • All courses taught by non-tenured faculty during years 1-3 of service, fall and spring
  • The highest enrolled course taught by non-tenured faculty during years 4-6 of service, fall and spring
  • One class taught by tenured faculty (Spring only)
  • Any sections not selected by the above criteria for which the faculty member opts-in to evaluation
